American Blackjack
What is commonly played in most casinos is American blackjack. One idiosyncrasy
of this version is if the dealer's face-up card is an ace or a ten-value, the
dealer offers the players “insurance” and then checks the hole card to see if
the dealer’s hand is a blackjack.
If the dealer has a blackjack, all players will lose their initial bets, except
for those players who also have blackjacks and is therefore a push. Those who
made the insurance bet win 2 to 1 for half the value of the initial bet.
Although the target value of 21 is the key in blackjack, there are other kinds
of blackjack games that are played slightly differently.
Spanish 21
This game is played on a regular blackjack table with 48-card Spanish decks
which are actually standard 52-card decks but will all Tens cards removed.
By removing all of the Tens, Spanish 21 gains an increase in house advantage by
about 25%. However, to compensate, casinos offer other very lucrative bonuses
and gameplay options, compared to the regular blackjack.
European Blackjack
Another variation of blackjack is the European version with the No Hole Card or
No Peek rule. The dealer has only one card facing up and gets the second card
only after all players have played their hands. Therefore, if the dealer does
end up with a blackjack, you will lose any additional bets made.
No doubt, all of the above blackjack games are very fun to play. Learning more
about the variations and proper strategies for playing can even add to the
enjoyment of playing and winning at blackjack games.
